San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD) uses a variety of assessments to better understand student learning and growth. Below you’ll find information about the assessments given across grade levels, along with links to official resources for families.
Early Learning(TK-2)
Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP)
The DRDP is an observational assessment used in Transitional Kindergarten (TK). Teachers observe children during regular activities and document growth in areas such as language, literacy, math, and social-emotional development. Results help guide instruction and provide families with a fuller picture of each child’s development.

Renaissance Star Early Literacy
This computer-adaptive assessment measures early reading and readiness skills. The test adjusts in real time to match each student’s ability level, helping identify strengths and areas for growth in foundational literacy.

Amira Reading (Amira + ISIP)
Amira is an online reading assessment and practice tool where students read aloud to the computer. Amira listens, analyzes fluency, comprehension, and decoding, and provides teachers with detailed reports. It is designed to be engaging and low-stress while giving educators high-quality data to guide instruction.

Report Cards
Elementary report cards are released at the end of each of three trimesters. Report cards are based on the grade-level standards. Renaissance Star Curriculum-Based Measurement
Star CBM is a one-on-one assessment where teachers listen to students read aloud or answer math questions in real time. The goal is to measure foundational reading and math skills quickly and accurately, giving teachers immediate insight into how students are progressing. These short checks help teachers identify where extra support may be needed and allow families to see growth in essential early literacy and numeracy skills.

Renaissance Star Reading
Star Reading is a short, computer-adaptive assessment that evaluates reading comprehension and vocabulary. Teachers use the data to match students with appropriately challenging texts and track growth over time.

Level Learning is an online assessment tool that measures students’ progress in Mandarin reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The assessments provide teachers with detailed information about each child’s language development and help guide instruction in dual language programs. Students take the assessments at multiple points during the year so teachers and families can see growth over time and ensure students are on track in developing Mandarin proficiency.

Star Math is a computer-adaptive assessment designed to measure math understanding and skills. It provides teachers with information to guide instruction and monitor growth throughout the year.

mCLASS Lectura (Spanish)
mCLASS Lectura is used in SLUSD’s Spanish dual language immersion programs to measure foundational literacy skills in Spanish. Like its English counterpart, Lectura provides one-on-one assessments of phonological awareness, decoding, and fluency to support biliteracy development. Results help teachers identify strengths and target specific areas for support in Spanish reading.

Renaissance Star Reading & Math
At the secondary level, Star Reading and Star Math continue to provide quick, adaptive assessments that measure comprehension, vocabulary, and math skills. Data supports course placement and ongoing instructional planning.

Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project (MDTP)
The Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project (MDTP) provides online assessments that measure students’ readiness for math courses and their understanding of key concepts. These assessments are typically given in middle and high school to help teachers identify strengths and gaps in mathematical knowledge. Results guide placement decisions, support classroom instruction, and ensure that students are prepared for success in their next level of math learning.

California Statewide Assessments
California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)
CAASPP includes Smarter Balanced tests in English Language Arts and Math, given online each spring. These assessments measure progress toward college and career readiness.

California Science Test (CAST)
The CAST measures understanding of science concepts aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). It is taken online in grades 5, 8, and once in high school.

English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC)
The ELPAC is the state’s required test for students identified as English learners. It measures listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. There are two types:
- Initial ELPAC: Given once when a student first enrolls in a California school and their home language survey indicates a language other than English. It identifies whether a student is an English learner.
- Summative ELPAC: Given each spring to English learners until they meet reclassification criteria. It measures annual progress in English proficiency.

California Physical Fitness Test (PFT)
The PFT is given to students in grade 5, 7, and 9 to measure physical fitness in six areas: aerobic capacity, abdominal strength and endurance, trunk strength and flexibility, upper body strength and endurance, and overall flexibility. The goal is to help students learn about lifelong fitness habits. Results are used for student awareness and program planning, not for grading.

College Readiness Testing
PSAT (Preliminary SAT)
The PSAT provides practice for the SAT and can connect students with scholarship opportunities, including the National Merit Scholarship Program. It measures skills in reading, writing, and math.

SAT
The SAT is a college entrance exam accepted by many universities. It measures critical reading, writing, and math skills, and helps students demonstrate readiness for post-secondary education.

Advanced Placement (AP) Exams
AP Exams provide students the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school. Each exam is tied to an AP course, with subjects ranging from science to history to art. Scores of 3 or higher are recognized by many colleges for credit or placement.
