Digital Citizenship

According to Common Sense Media, media and technology are at the very center of all our lives today — especially our children’s.  Kids today spend over 50 hours of screen time every week. The media content they consume and create has a profound impact on their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.  Learning how to use media and technology wisely is an essential skill for life, and learning in the 21st century. But parents, teachers, and policymakers struggle to keep up with the rapidly changing digital world in which our children live and learn.  Now more than ever, they need a trusted guide to help them navigate a world where change is the only constant. (2015).  Cyber Bulling is national phenomenal that has had devastating impact on the lives of our students.  Take a quick moment to search for “cyber bullying” on the internet and you will find that there are over 18 million results!

At San Leandro Unified School District, we feel that it is imperative that we work with parents and our community to take a proactive approach to Digital Citizenship by providing students with the knowledge they need to interact with the constant flow of Digital Media that effects their daily lives.  Our students are clearly living in a world that moves much faster than when their parents and teachers grew-up. Events or discussions that we wouldn’t think twice about, end up posted on Youtube or Facebook faster than we could have passed a note across the classroom.  This can have a devastating effect on our students, intended or not.

One way that we are addressing this issue is by adopting curriculum that teaches students about internet safety and digital citizenship.  Students can log-on to AUP online using their slusd.us student log-in credential.  Students can access both at school and at home.  AUP online is self-paced and grade level appropriate curriculum that covers the following:

  • Internet safety
  • Responsible use of social networking
  • Bullying, cyber bullying and what to do
  • Credibility of internet resources
  • Ethical/social responsibility
  • Acceptable Use Agreement sign off

All students in San Leandro Unified School District are required to complete this Board Approved Program.  Information about this program can be found here.  We take cyber bullying very seriously.  You can report incidents cyber bullying via the following:
