Learning Visits in SLUSD

A process for educators and partners to observe, learn from, and celebrate the work happening in our schools.

San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD) welcomes educators, community partners, and organizations interested in learning from our schools. We are proud to share the innovative teaching, leadership, and community-building practices that make SLUSD a vibrant place for students and staff.

To protect instructional time, ensure student privacy, and maintain safe, focused campuses, all learning visits must be reviewed and approved in advance through the process outlined below.

Who May Request a Learning Visit

We welcome requests from:

  • School districts, colleges, universities, and education agencies
  • Professional associations or leadership networks
  • Community or nonprofit partners aligned with SLUSD’s mission and goals

Requests involving research, surveys, or data collection should follow the separate Research in SLUSD process.

How to Request a Visit

All requests must be submitted directly by the visiting organization using the SLUSD Learning Visit Request Form. Requests must be received at least three weeks before the proposed visit.

The form includes:

  • Organization and primary contact information
  • Purpose and focus of the visit
  • Proposed school, date(s), and time(s)
  • Number of visitors and roles
  • Areas of interest (e.g., classrooms, programs, leadership practices)

Review and Approval Process

All learning visit requests are reviewed by the District Office to ensure they:

  • Align with SLUSD’s mission, vision, and equity goals.
  • Minimize disruption to students and staff.
  • Protect the privacy and confidentiality of students and employees.

The District will coordinate with the host school principal to confirm timing and logistics.
Once reviewed, the requester will receive written notice of approval, approval with conditions, or denial.

Expectations for Approved Visits

To maintain a safe and respectful learning environment, all visitors must:

  • Check in at the school office, present valid identification, and wear a visitor badge at all times.
  • Follow the approved schedule and focus areas only.
  • Obtain prior written authorization for any recording, photography, or interviews.
  • Keep visits designed to minimize interruption to teaching and learning.
  • Respect the authority of the school principal or designee to modify or end a visit if it disrupts school operations.
