Important: Do not begin volunteering until you have completed all requirements for your assignment and the school site has notified you that you are approved.
How to Get Started
- Contact the school where you would like to volunteer.
- Complete the Volunteer Registration Form and sign the Volunteer Code of Conduct.
- If you are 18 or older, complete the annual online Mandated Reporter Training.
- Complete all screening and clearance requirements for your assignment.
- Wait for the school site to confirm your approval before volunteering.
Volunteer Levels
Level 1 — Minimal Interaction
Level 1 assignments generally involve direct student contact for less than one hour per month and no one-on-one responsibility for students.
Requirements:
- Volunteer Registration Form
- Volunteer Code of Conduct
- Annual Mandated Reporter Training for volunteers age 18 or older
- District automated records and Megan’s Law screening
- School site approval
Level 1 volunteers do not need fingerprint or tuberculosis (TB) clearance unless their assignment changes or the District requires additional screening.
Level 2 — More Than Minimal Interaction
Level 2 assignments may involve ongoing student contact, one-on-one or small-group interaction, regular academic support, student supervision, overnight field trips, athletics, clubs, or other duties designated by the District.
Requirements:
- All Level 1 requirements
- SLUSD fingerprint clearance
- TB clearance
Who Determines the Volunteer Level?
The school site administrator or designee determines the appropriate level based on the volunteer’s duties and degree of student interaction. Volunteers and families do not select their own level.
Mandated Reporter Training
Volunteers age 18 or older must complete the online Mandated Reporter Training each school year before volunteering. The school site will provide the training link.
After completing the training, volunteers may submit their certificate of completion, or the site may verify completion through the training report. One annual completion applies to all SLUSD schools where the volunteer serves during that school year.
Fingerprint Clearance
Fingerprint clearance is required for Level 2 volunteers and other assignments designated by the District.
If fingerprinting is required, you must complete the SLUSD fingerprinting process—even if you were previously fingerprinted for an employer, another school district, or another organization. Previous fingerprint clearance cannot be transferred to SLUSD.
Tuberculosis (TB) Clearance
Level 2 volunteers must provide proof of TB clearance before volunteering.
- New Level 2 volunteers must provide documentation of a TB examination completed within the past 60 days showing that they are free of active tuberculosis.
- The District may accept written verification from another school district that verifies clearance within the past four years.
- Volunteers with a positive TB test must provide documentation of a chest X-ray or other appropriate medical evaluation showing that they are free of active tuberculosis.
- TB clearance must be renewed as required.
Volunteer Drivers
Volunteers who transport students in a privately owned vehicle must complete the District’s driver requirements and receive full volunteer clearance before driving students. Volunteer approval alone does not authorize an individual to transport students.
Requirements include:
- A valid driver’s license
- Required automobile liability insurance
- Required District driver and vehicle documentation
- Transportation of Students in Privately Owned Vehicles — Certificate and Authorization
Drivers must meet the insurance limits stated in the District’s current transportation requirements and all applicable California requirements.
Minimum automobile liability insurance listed on the District transportation exhibit: $100,000 bodily injury each individual; $300,000 bodily injury total each accident; $25,000 property damage total each accident. $100,00 Uninsured Motorist Coverage each individual; $300.000 total each accident
Field Trips
A field trip may be classified as Level 1 or Level 2 depending on the volunteer’s responsibilities.
- A day trip where District staff supervise students may be Level 1.
- A trip where a volunteer supervises an assigned student or group may be Level 2.
- Overnight field trips are generally Level 2.
Volunteering at More Than One SLUSD School
Contact each school where you plan to volunteer. Mandated Reporter Training is completed once per school year, but each school may require separate registration or approval based on the assignment.
Volunteer Packet
The Volunteer Packet includes all required forms and information needed to get started, including the Volunteer Registration Form, Code of Conduct, Volunteer Interest Form, and screening requirements.
Volunteers are categorized as Level 1 or Level 2 based on their level of interaction with students, with specific requirements in place to ensure student safety and a positive school environment.
Please complete the packet and submit it to the school site where you wish to volunteer. You will be notified by site staff once you are cleared to begin. Contact your school for the most recent volunteer packet.
