Melissa Fegurgur, Member

Trustee Area 1

Term Date 2023-2024

Melissa Fegurgur has worked and volunteered in service to children and families in San Leandro and throughout Alameda County for over a decade. Professionally, she serves as a Program Manager, dedicated to the well-being of children within safe and nurturing homes.  Melissa’s journey began with a foundation in early childhood development and parent education, culminating in a Bachelor of Science in Child Development from San Diego State University and a Master of Social Work degree from California State University East Bay.

Melissa first worked as an early childhood educator for mothers in a residential substance abuse treatment program, while simultaneously volunteering with the Family Justice Center, serving survivors of domestic violence. During graduate school, Melissa advocated for Bay Area children facing detention and deportation. She is also a group facilitator with experience ranging from Dialectical Behavior Therapy, to empowering unhoused pregnant and parenting women to achieve independence. Melissa’s community-focused experience equips her with the proper insights into addressing the challenges that impact San Leandro families and their children’s education. Melissa is committed to a strengths-based approach to the needs of SLUSD’s diverse community, focusing on safety, equity, and inclusion.

As an SLUSD alum and parent of two children in the district, Melissa has cherished the collaborative relationships formed over the years. She notably led the Parent Teacher Committee at Halkin Elementary School, establishing parent support groups and orchestrating community engagement activities and fundraisers.  She brings this unique perspective to her role as a board member.  Melissa will work to ensure that 1) Students have the access and support they need to receive a comprehensive education, 2) Families feel heard and valued, and 3) Good working relationships are fostered between the school staff and community.
