SEARCHSan Leandro, CA: The San Leandro Unified School District hosted an opportunity for the public to discuss a proposal to rename Woodrow Wilson Elementary School submitted to district leadership by current Wilson staff and family members in July 2020.
Reasons for the name change stated in the proposal included Woodrow Wilson’s resegregation of the federal government and vocal support for racist policies and practices during his tenure. The proposal is available for review in its entirety at this link.
In following SLUSD Board of Education Policy 7310, the school administration has conducted several staff and community meetings to discuss this name change and sent a survey to current Wilson Elementary families to gather community voice. From all of these venues, a majority of respondents indicated support for the proposal. The Wilson Elementary principal shared the results and feedback summary at the October 13, 2020 board meeting.
In response to the results presented at that meeting, the school board trustees requested a further review of the proposal from a Community Advisory Committee of local leaders and historians. The committee reviewed the proposal and the feedback gathered to date. This committee will also hear and summarize public comments shared at the forum on March 2 on behalf of the school board.
