Press Release: San Leandro High School Gymnasium Construction Underway

The San Leandro Unified School District officials celebrated the start of construction on the new $67 million San Leandro High School gymnasium at a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, November 7. The state-of-the-art facility is projected to be completed in two years and will be one of the largest high school gymnasiums in the Bay Area.

“This facility will be a treasure for our entire San Leandro community,” said Dr. Mike McLaughlin, SLUSD Superintendent, “I am proud to serve this community that always comes through to show support for our children.” 

The gymnasium will include new locker rooms, a weight room, and a practice facility alongside a new southern entrance to the school and enhanced parking. See construction plans and videos on the district’s website here.

In attendance were members of the Measure N campaign committee who helped get community support for this funding: Stephen Cassidy (chair), Xouhoa Bowen, Dr. Kevin Collins, Chris Deng, Lesley Feikert, Evelyn Gonzalez, Tom Morse, Peter Oshinski, Marina Rodriguez, Leo Sheridan, and Jill Stowe. 

Measure N chairperson Stephen Cassidy shared some remarks at the ceremony. “In the decade that Dr. McLaughlin has been in San Leandro Unified, he has set visionary goals for improvement that will leave a lasting legacy for all San Leandrans. This gymnasium will be enjoyed by generations of students and families for years to come.”

Also in attendance were school board trustees James Aguilar (President), Peter Oshinski (Vice President), Evelyn Gonzalez, Diana Prola, Leo Sheridan, and Liz Toledo. They were joined by SLUSD staff Dr. Sonal Patel, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services; Dr. Zarina Zanipatin, Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services; Lawrence Simon, Assistant Superintendent of Information Services; SLHS Co-Principal Ronald Richardson and SLUSD Athletic Director Nick Thomas. The City of San Leandro officials present included Mayor Pauline Cutter, Councilmembers Victor Aguilar, Bryan Azevedo, and Pete Ballew. 

The team behind the construction project was also recognized: Construction managers RGM Kramer Incorporated, Ridge Greene, Marc Hunter, and Nolan Thomas; PBK Architects Jackie Bassman and Ted St. Germain; Contractor Overaa Construction team Jerry Overaa, John Schulte, Sean Stevenson, and Anna Dissman; Jason Zalinski Inspection & Construction Services.
