Recognizing Our Superintend Award Recipents

On April 28, 2026, two people associated with the San Leandro Adult & Career Education Center were highlighted: Amaboi Ajawara, a nursing program student, and Catalina Garzon, a volunteer at our school.

The Ajawara story had some challenges. He initially worked in the film industry but suffered from burnout, which motivated a desire for a change. He found out about the San Leandro Adult & Career Center from a CPR instructor. This sparked his pursuit of an LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) license. However, he learned that he must take certain steps before he could achieve his goal. The first hurdle is to receive his CNA License. He found that he didn’t do as well as he needed to on the test. Six months later, he returned and was successful. Today, he has his CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant) license and is in the LVN program. He also wants to become an RN (Registered Nurse). He won the Superintendent Award for excellence and perseverance.

Garzon was motivated by an ESL teacher from our staff to volunteer for the Pre-K students. “She has been an inspiration in the way she is so passionate about her job and the work she does at the school.” She really enjoys working with the students and being part of events such as the unforgettable Movie Night. The educational experience isn’t only for the children but also for her. “I’ve learned that caring for the needs of others brings more meaning to your life than simply caring for your own.” She received the Superintendent Award for volunteering.
