Here, we provide our multilingual families with information and resources on English Learner (EL) programs. We also highlight how we foster multilingualism throughout our schools and diverse communities.

Family Literacy

Jefferson Elementary (Inspired by ELAC)

One morning in December, a group of families came together in the school library to attend Jefferson Elementary’s family literacy event. This interactive session was organized in part by the site English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC). Families were invited to talk about reading experiences and learn some strategies for reading with their children at home. Everyone received a copy of a new book, and students joined the gathering to read together with their families. The event was very well attended and the feedback from attendees has Jefferson thinking of more opportunities to bring families together for future literacy events!

Lincoln Students Visit the Oakland Museum

In November Lincoln’s ELD teacher, Scott Gordon organized a fantastic field trip for Lincoln's English language learner students.  The students were invited to the Oakland Museum of California’s special exhibit “Por El Pueblo, The Legacy and Influence of Malaquias Montoya.” The exhibit highlighted the Chicano Artist and Activist Malaquías Montoya and his decades of work creating posters, murals, and prints to highlight and galvanize Social Justice Movements.

The students reflected on his work sparking discussion on its cross-cultural context, meaning, and how they connected to individual pieces.

SLHS Newcomers Visit Angel Island

Our Newcomer US History / Gov-Econ students headed to Angel Island on February 29th. Newcomer students in US history and Gov/Econ had a fantastic day visiting Angel Island as part of a unit of study on immigration. Students toured the barracks and the museum, enjoyed the ferry ride and the hike, and reenacted Titanic! Thanks to SLED for funding the trip!

Learning from the Interim ELPAC

In December, San Leandro High School piloted the Interim ELPAC. This is the first year the state of California has offered this interim assessment and the teachers at SLHS wanted to take advantage of this opportunity.  The Interim ELPAC is aligned to the ELD Standards just as the Summative ELPAC is and allows students an opportunity to demonstrate their English learning progress and practice before the formal state test. Teachers used this exam to better understand students’ progress and adjust instruction. They met in collaborative teams to review the data and discuss innovative teaching strategies to meet student needs. Students were eager to see their scores and compare their growth to their previous ELPAC
