November District Update: See what's happening in SLUSD!

SAN LEANDRO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
"Making Excellence Our Tradition"
November 2022

Dear SLUSD Community,

There have been many joyous celebrations at our schools over these past several weeks! This time of year is always filled with wonderful energy both inside and outside the classroom. I want to thank our school staff and our families who help organize our school community events, like our Fall Festivals, with so much love. These moments build community and create lifetime memories for our students and families.

We also appreciate our community’s support for Measure N, which voters passed in 2020. This funding has been essential for many of our facility improvements. We are excited to break ground on our signature Measure N project, the new gymnasium at San Leandro High School, in just a few days. We will share updates as we move along, and in two short years, we will have a facility that represents our shared commitment to providing the best for our students.

Thank you for all you do to support our schools!

Dr. Mike McLaughlin

Joan Oghogho, Washington Elementary

Roosevelt Elementary’s Kyla Salter and Washington Elementary’s Joan Oghogho received the Superintendent’s Award at the October school board meeting. Both students were nominated by their principals for recognition of their excellence in leadership at their respective schools. Kyla is in 4th grade and has led many campus improvement and student engagement initiatives. Joan is in 3rd grade and has excelled academically while being a strong ally for her fellow students. Join us in congratulating both students for their excellence and achievement, and look for more Superintendent Awards next month!
NOVEMBER RECOGNITIONS

Native American Heritage Month

In SLUSD, we recognize that our schools sit within the traditional homeland of the Halkin–a Chochenyo Ohlone and Bay Miwok-speaking people. The Halkin people continue to live and thrive in contemporary San Leandro, and we acknowledge and make visible the colonial history that has largely invisibilized them. During November, also known as Native American Heritage Month, Indigenous People’s Heritage Month, as well as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, we encourage you to learn more about the heritage, culture, and experience of the Halkin and other indigenous peoples historically and in American life today.

UPCOMING FAMILY LEARNING SERIES

SLUSD’s online parent sessions provide strategies for parents/caregivers to support their child’s growth and development. Join us at an upcoming session:

Wednesday, November 9, 5:00 - 6:00 pm • Topic: The SLUSD Graduate Profile

Did you know that the San Leandro School district has a Graduate Profile that articulates its shared vision for a set of student outcomes that define what all graduates should know and be able to do to be prepared for post-secondary education, career, and civic participation? In this session, we will familiarize ourselves with the graduate profile and consider how the parents/caregivers and the community supports our young people to realize their academic potential.

The session is open to all San Leandro parents/caregivers with TK-12th grade students. Raffle Prizes! Spanish and Chinese translations will be provided.

STATE TESTING UPDATE

alt_text

On October 24, the California Department of Education publicly released the results of the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in English Language Arts and Mathematics, California Science Test (CST), English Language Proficiency Assessments (ELPAC), and the California Alternate Assessments (CAA).

You can access your child’s score report through the Aeries parent portal. From the Aeries Portal, click on “Test Scores.” Next, select the option for “State Test Score Reports.” Then, choose the desired score report and language option to view the PDF file of your student’s score report. This report will give you information about how well they met the expectations of the grade level and where they are doing well or may need support in each subject. This is helpful information to discuss with your child’s teacher to understand how they can be supported in the classroom and at home.

It is important to remember that these tests are one measure of your child’s learning. Report card grades, classroom work, and teacher observations are also measures that help give a more complete picture of your child’s progress. Our schools are also equipped to support learning with intervention programs, academic specialists, and counselors as we recover from the disruption of the pandemic.

To learn more about your child’s scores, visit the Starting Smarter website at https://www.ca.startingsmarter.org/. Districtwide results can be reviewed here: https://caaspp-elpac.ets.org/caaspp/

COVID TEST KITS

Your school will distribute at-home COVID test kits to all students before the school breaks listed below:

  • Winter Break - December 26 to January 6

  • Presidents’ Week Break - February 20 to 24

  • Spring Break - April 3 to 7

Each kit contains one test with instructions. Take before returning to school.
