SAN LEANDRO, CA – Longtime San Leandro resident and district parent leader Melissa Fegurgur has been selected to fill the SLUSD governing board in Area 1 

At last night’s special school board meeting, Melissa Fegurgur was selected and officially sworn in as the school board trustee for Area 1 in the San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD). Ms. Fegurgur's term will extend until the next regularly scheduled Statewide General Election for governing board members, slated for November 8, 2024.

For over a decade, Melissa Fegurgur has demonstrated her commitment to serving children and families across the San Leandro community. Professionally, she holds the role of Program Manager, dedicated to ensuring children's well-being and healthy development within safe and nurturing homes. Her journey to her current position began with a foundation in early childhood and parent education, culminating in a Bachelor of Science in Child Development from San Diego State University and a Master's Degree in Social Work from California State University East Bay.

As a dedicated parent with two children in SLUSD, Fegurgur has actively participated in school initiatives. She notably led the Parent Teacher Committee at Halkin Elementary School, establishing parent support groups and orchestrating community engagement activities and fundraisers to support the school.

When asked about her motivation for joining the SLUSD Board of Education, Fegurgur shared her deep-rooted connection to the district. As a former student and a current parent, she brings a unique perspective to the boardroom. Fegurgur's advocacy efforts encompass students with diverse needs, emphasizing safety and inclusion. Her social work background equips her with insights into addressing challenges stemming from socioeconomic factors that can impact a child's educational experience.
