December District Update: Heading into the Holiday Season!

SAN LEANDRO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
"Making Excellence Our Tradition"
December 2022

Dear SLUSD Community,

I hope everyone enjoyed a restful Thanksgiving break! During that time, the East Bay Agency for Children and the San Leandro Unified School District Family Resource Center at the Barbara Lee Center for Health and Wellness facilitated our annual Thanksgiving Meal Distribution event for several hundred of our district families. Please join me in thanking Ly Ha from the Family Resource Center and all of the many volunteers that spent their time and energy to support our community.

With winter break right around the corner, December brings even more opportunities to participate in our schools and support one another. Along with many celebrations, our schools are organizing food and gift drives to make sure everyone has what they need to enjoy this holiday season. Watch ParentSquare to find ways you can participate if you are able. If you know of anyone in our district, or perhaps your own family is experiencing hardships, reach out to our parent facilitators at your school so we can tap into our collective community strength. You can find the contact information on our website here.

Enjoy this festive time, and thank you for supporting each other in our district!

Dr. Mike McLaughlin
Superintendent

TIPS FROM CARE SOLACE: DE-STRESS DECEMBER

With the holidays upon us, there are many reasons to be joyful. It's a time for sharing, laughter, giving back, and creating memories with family and friends. The holidays, however, can also be stressful. We may be making plans to visit loved ones, managing our budget for gifts, or coordinating events with our community. With an already-packed schedule, these additional tasks can stress to our lives. Celebrating and connecting with family is important during the holiday season, but it's also essential to care for your mental health. National Stress-Free Family Holidays Month brings awareness to the harmful effects of stress and reminds everyone to take care of themselves as they approach the holidays. Here are some helpful tips for a more stress-free holiday season:

  • Make modifications to holiday traditions. Consider ways to modify traditions that may negatively impact your mental health. It can be nice to stick with holiday traditions, but your mental health should take priority.
  • Don't forget the power of "no." It's okay to say no to plans if you are feeling overwhelmed.
  • Plan ahead. Keeping a calendar of events can help you stay on track and prepare for events. It can be stressful to shop on the same day as an event, so keep a list of tasks to prevent the rush.
  • Talk about your feelings. You might be overwhelmed or missing a loved one. Talking about your feelings with a trusted friend or family member is okay. You are not in this alone.
  • Take time for self-care. It's important to take care of ourselves before caring for others. This holiday season, make time for yourself.
  • Find a therapist. Acknowledge your feelings and talk to a professional when needed. If you would like help finding a mental health care provider, use Care Solace, a complimentary and confidential coordination service provided by San Leandro Unified School District:
  • Call 888-515-0595. Support is available 24/7/365 in over 200 languages.
  • Visit www.caresolace.com/slusdfamilies and either search on your own or click "Book Appointment" for assistance by video chat, email, or phone.

CALIFORNIA HEALTHY KIDS SURVEY

Please help us learn more about what is happening in our classrooms, our playgrounds, our schools, and our district!

The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is an annual anonymous, confidential survey of all 5th to 11th-grade students, SLUSD families, and staff. Surveys will be accessible on your school’s website starting in January.

The survey helps us to analyze data on the following:
  • Youth health and wellness
  • School connectedness
  • School climate and safety
  • School violence
The results of this survey support our efforts to reduce student risk behaviors and build schools that are drug-free, safe, and supportive environments.

Parental consent is required for 5th and 6th graders. Watch for a permission slip coming via ParentSquare for your 5th or 6th grader, and ensure it is returned so we can hear about their experiences to strengthen our programs and services.

Tuesday, December 6,⋅6:00 – 7:00 pm • African American Family Landing Pad
SLUSD and Blaze Consulting host a supportive space for Black Families and Families Raising Black Children. COVID TEST KIT

Your school will distribute at-home COVID test kits to all students before the Winter Break (December 26 through January 6). Each kit contains one test with instructions on how to administer the test. Please have your student(s) test on the Sunday before returning to school. If your child tests positive, keep them home and report the positive result to your child’s school. School staff will provide further information regarding when they can return. Testing is strongly recommended but not required for students to return to school after break. If your student did not receive a test, please screen them for COVID symptoms on the morning they return.
