San Leandro, CA—In a thrilling postseason run that has captivated the school and community, the San Leandro High School varsity softball team is headed to the North Coast Section (NCS) Championship game for the first time in program history.
After a tough end to the regular season and entering the playoffs as the 11th seed, the Lady Pirates knew the road ahead would be challenging, but they rose to the occasion. In the first round, San Leandro stunned the 6th seeded Moreau Catholic under the lights with a decisive 14 to 4 victory. Momentum carried the team into the quarterfinals against the 3rd seeded Arroyo High School, an opponent who had defeated them just two weeks earlier. This time, the Pirates came out strong and held off a late push to win 4 to 3, advancing to the semifinals.
The semifinal matchup required a two-hour trip to Santa Rosa to face 2nd seeded Maria Carrillo High School. In a high-scoring, hard-fought battle, the Lady Pirates scored their 11th run in the top of the 7th inning and held off a final push from Maria Carrillo, winning 11 to 10.
The team is led by Head Coach Kelsi Thomas, now in her seventh season at the helm. She is supported by a dedicated coaching staff that includes Ajay Bromstead, a proud San Leandro High School alum; Jessica Lemmon, former head coach and athletic director; and Kayla Hidalgo, also an alum and former player under Coach Thomas.
“This team has broken records and made history for our softball program,” said Head Coach Kelsi Thomas. “But more than that, this group is special because of how they play for each other. Every single player has contributed in some way to get us to this point. It has been incredible to watch them grow together and to start to see just how special they really are.”
SLHS Athletic Director Nick Thomas added, “I am so proud of this group of student athletes and coaches. Reaching the finals is a testament to their heart, determination, and unbreakable spirit. No matter the outcome of Saturday, they have already proven what they are made of.”
The Pirates now prepare for the NCS finals this Saturday with pride, passion, and purpose fueling their historic run. Win or lose, they have already cemented their place in San Leandro High School’s history books.
