SAN LEANDRO, CA: At the May board meeting, the San Leandro Unified School District school board celebrated the successful passage of Measure J, the district’s $174 million school improvement bond measure. Trustees accepted the election certification from the Alameda County Registrar of Voters, showing that the measure passed with over 63% approval, well above the threshold of 55% approval needed to pass.

“Like all our past efforts, this bond measure isn't just about securing the funds needed to improve our schools; it's a heartfelt vote of confidence in our ongoing commitment to enhancing our educational facilities," said Dr. Mike McLaughlin, Superintendent. "By supporting this measure, the residents of San Leandro are demonstrating their willingness to invest in the futures of our community's children for many generations to come.

School Board President Evelyn González also appreciated the community's support of Measure J. "I'm proud to live in a community that values public education,” said González. “At a time when the state budget shortfall creates tremendous risk for our schools, the San Leandro voters boldly supported our community's children.  Thank you, San Leandro voters."

In a difficult election cycle for voter turnout, Yes on Measure J Campaign Committee Chairperson and former San Leandro Mayor Stephen Cassidy highlighted factors behind Measure J’s success. "Within the last eight years, San Leandro voters have passed three significant bond measures plus a parcel tax. The reasons for this incredible support of our public schools are clear. The school district has spent the funds it has received wisely and regularly communicates on the progress being made in our schools,” Cassidy noted. “Families and community members clearly see and appreciate this dedication, resulting in support for school measures on election day."

The Board of Trustees commended the Yes on Measure J Campaign Steering Committee for their pivotal role in the district's successful passage of Measure J. The committee's dedication and unwavering support for the San Leandro community were highlighted, with special recognition given to members James Aguilar, Dylan Bolt, Maeve Cassidy, Stephen Cassidy, Melissa Fegurgur, Lesley Feikert, Karissa Yee Findley, Domenic Gonzalez, Evelyn González, Imagine Gonzales, and Juan González for their generous investment of time.

Funds from Measure J will be allocated to a series of projects to renovate existing structures and construct new facilities. This comprehensive plan includes:

  • Designing, acquiring, and constructing dedicated housing for teachers and staff.

  • Building new facilities, including a library, student center, classrooms, and a music building.

  • Reconfiguring and reconstructing the entrance and administrative offices at San Leandro High School to bolster campus safety and security.

  • Renovating and modernizing classrooms and school facilities with flooring, windows, doors, lighting, and paint updates.

  • Upgrading outdoor athletic facilities, including turf and track replacements.

  • Enhancing campus communication and security systems with new intercom and bell systems.

  • Replacing roofs and performing ongoing infrastructure maintenance.

  • Updating technology to stay current with industry advancements.
