Celebrating Progress, Pride, and the Power of Community

June 4, 2025
Preschool Graduation

Dear San Leandro Unified Staff and Families,

As we wrap up the school year, I want to thank you for the trust and partnership you share with us each day. Your support is felt across our schools and makes a lasting difference in the lives of our students and the success of our district.

Just recently, I had the joy of meeting some of our youngest learners from the Class of 2038. Paired with celebrating our graduating seniors, these moments are powerful reminders of how quickly time passes and how precious our time together truly is. I’m incredibly proud of the growth we see from start to finish here in San Leandro Unified, which is made possible by the strength and care of our community.

Thank you for being an essential part of our San Leandro story. I wish you and your loved ones a summer filled with rest, laughter, and connection. We look forward to welcoming you back for the 2025–26 school year.

With gratitude,
Dr. Mike McLaughlin
Superintendent

Protecting Free Behavioral Health Services for All Students

Starting in the 2025–26 school year, SLUSD will begin collecting student insurance information to help us continue offering free behavioral (mental) health services to all who need them. This effort is part of a statewide initiative to sustainably fund school-based mental health care, at no cost to families, by billing insurance providers directly when possible. Rest assured, this will have no impact on your insurance coverage. Learn more about what’s ahead and how you can help us keep this vital support in place.

Student Spotlight

Gio
San Leandro Unified proudly congratulates San Leandro High School freshman Gianardo “Gio” Fiero, whose letter to the mayor sparked a $300,000 renovation of the basketball court at Hillcrest Knolls Park. What began as a COVID-era writing challenge from his mom turned into lasting change for the community. Gio merely asked for a three-point line to be painted, but his request and advocacy led to a fully refurbished court with ADA access, completed in November 2024. Gio's story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when young people raise their voices and take action. See his story here.

June Recognitions

Pride

June is Pride Month in SLUSD!

The San Leandro Board of Education and San Leandro Unified School District proudly recognize June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month with Resolution 25-19. Throughout the month, rainbow flags will be flown at every SLUSD school and facility as a visible symbol of our unwavering support for the LGBTQ+ community. We invite everyone to join us in honoring the diversity of our community, including the diversity of sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. Happy Pride Month 2025!

Honoring Juneteenth in SLUSD

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, became a federal holiday in 2021 to commemorate the end of slavery in the U.S. It marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, over two years after it was issued. In recognition of this historic day, the San Leandro Unified School District Board of Trustees annually passes Resolution No. 25-20, officially honoring Juneteenth as a day of reflection, education, and celebration. This resolution reaffirms SLUSD’s commitment to Black liberation, racial justice, and inclusive education year-round.
