San Leandro, CA—San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD) has become the first school district in the Bay Area to install Audio Enhancement technology in every classroom across the district. This initiative is transforming how teachers communicate, how students engage, and how schools respond during emergencies.
Each classroom is now equipped with a microphone system and multiple strategically placed speakers, creating a surround sound-like experience that ensures students can hear instruction clearly from every corner of the room. With this improved sound clarity, students are more focused and engaged, and teachers can instruct without straining their voices. It is a powerful shift that enhances everyday learning for all students.
“This is a game changer,” said Dr. Michael McLaughlin, Superintendent of SLUSD. “We are building learning environments where students can stay focused, teachers are supported, and safety is always prioritized.”
In addition to improving classroom instruction, Audio Enhancement includes safety features that enable staff to discreetly request assistance using alert buttons on their wearable microphones. These alerts are integrated with a new system of digital display boards installed in every classroom and hallway, allowing schools to instantly broadcast emergency alerts or important announcements campus-wide.
This groundbreaking work was made possible by the San Leandro community through the passage of local bond measures. With this support, SLUSD continues to lead the Bay Area in bringing innovative, student-centered technology to its schools.
