James Madison Fun Run 2025
Dear Madison Families, A huge thank you to our amazing JMPTO, the incredible Mr. Daniels, the always-energizing DJ Emet, our dedicated Madison Staff, and of course, our brilliant students who lit up the stage with their talents! Stay tuned—a highlight video will be released soon! Friday’s Annual Fun Run was a day filled with movement, joy, and immense Madison pride! Our students gave it their all—some ran over 82 laps, while others walked and ran arm-in-arm with friends and family. It was a beautiful celebration of community and wellness. We love partnering with Healthy Kids Fundraiser because it brings us together in a fun and meaningful way to support our students. And great news—our fundraiser is still open for 10 more days! There’s still time to contribute, earn prizes, and help us reach our goal. Every dollar raised goes directly toward creating unique and enriching learning opportunities for our students. These include: - 4th Grade Project Mosaic Camp - Field trips to Ardenwood Historic Farm, Sacramento, The Tech Museum, Hiller Aviation Museum, and the Marine Science Institute - In-class experiences with incredible partners like Save the Bay, the American Indian Education Center, The Village Method, and Nexplore 🎯 Our goal is to raise $40,000—and we’re not there yet! Let’s come together to finish strong. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference and directly supports the incredible experiences we offer our students. Donate today and help us cross the finish line! With gratitude,
Principal Smith

Our team name is Gator-Stangs!
Thank you, Coach Phillips for coaching our Gator-Stangs Basketball Team! Our students are doing great and their team spirit is a testament to the power of playing on a sports team! Come out and watch our next game at the San Leandro High School Gym on April 26 at 9:00 AM!
We are delighted to inform you that San Leandro Unified School District can boast 7 elementary Champions of Discovery, teachers and their classes who have earned recognition for excellence in science for the 2024-25 school year.Congratulations on providing the school environment in which these Champions can engage in meaningful, joyful science learning & teaching, especially during this challenging year. They serve as inspirational role models, allowing fellow teachers to see how science learning can engage students and ease lesson planning across all disciplines. . To earn this recognition, teachers documented and reflected on some of the ways their students explored science in their daily lives, collected and evaluated data, met or learned about STEM role models, and imagined their own future place in science. The goal of the Champions of Discovery Challenge is to build scientific literacy while fostering students’ sense of belonging in STEM. Research shows that strong early science learning:
Improves reading and math proficiency
Is fundamental to science achievement in high school and beyond
Inspires students to join the growing STEM workforce
Congratulations to this year’s SLUSD Champions of Discovery: James Madison Elementary

In addition to recognition and bragging rights, these teachers will receive a prize package with books, and science materials for their class, and have additional scientist lead programs made available to them in the next school year. Community Resources for Science (CRS) is honored to be a long-term partner with James Madison Elementary. For 28+ years, CRS has been providing opportunities that magnify children’s understanding of our world and reveal possible pathways into futures of exploring, inventing, discovering and creating. We arrange for scientists and engineers from local companies and UC Berkeley to lead awe-inspiring, thought-provoking science learning experiences for San Leandro students. The majority of these STEM role models are women and/or people of color, and they broaden students’ vision of “who” can be a scientist or engineer. So far this year 6 classes – nearly 170 students – in SLUSD have met and learned together with hundreds of well-prepared, diverse and enthusiastic STEM professionals. They’ve explored robots, health topics, solar energy, seed germination, the human brain, the forces of flight, and so much more. We have also enjoyed leading professional development workshops with teachers at James Madison this year.
Southwest Asian & North African American | Arab American Heritage Month
April marks the annual Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) Heritage Month and Arab American Heritage Month. SWANA is a decolonial and geographical term that represents the various communities located in Southwest Asia and North Africa. SWANA includes Arabs and the term has been adopted to be more inclusive of SWANA communities that may not identify as Arab. The purpose of the heritage month is to increase awareness about the vibrant history, cultures, experiences, contributions, and resiliency of the SWANA community.
Most people may be more familiar with Arab American Heritage Month. In 2022, Congress, the U.S. Department of State, and most state governors issued proclamations commemorating National Arab American Heritage Month. The purpose Arab American Heritage Month is to confront bigotry and negative stereotypes against Arab Americans in this country. Madison recognizes and celebrates the rich and complicated identities, cultures, and histories of SWANA and Arab American communities in our region.
Happy Easter, Memorial Day, and Happy Passover to all of our Madison Families who celebrate these celebrations!
