January Weekly Update

2024

What's Happening This Week:
Greetings Madison Community!
Happy New Years!
School Resumes on Jan. 08th!

As we settle in to the new year, there is something about reflecting upon all that we have accomplished so far this school year. We have had some amazing school wide events including, our Autumn Moon Festival, our Hispanic Family Celebration, our Trunk or Treat Harvest Festival, and our Reclassification Celebration! Additionally, we have gone full steam ahead with our STEM, STEAM, Make, Dream theme with our Port of Oakland Science Day, the SLED funded Lawrence Hall of Science Night, Rosa Parks Walks Day, and our amazing Abilities Awareness Faire. We ended the year with an incredible Computer Science Night with Lego Education!

You may wonder what is next? On deck, we have Lunar New Year coming on January 26th! Save the date and let us know if you are interested in joining our planning team! On January 30th, Madison will be showcasing the School Board's Celebrating Schools Presentations for the community! We hope our Madison Community will come out to cheer us on!

We resume parent community meetings in January! I want to name the importance of parent involvement in these community meetings. We want to foster parent community and parent voice to help shape and guide our work together as a school. We invite all members to join us to learn and grow as we build a caring learning community for all students at Madison.

January 16 4:30 PM ELAC Meeting

January 16 5:30 PM SSC Meeting

January 23 6:00 PM LCAP Meeting/Dinner/Childcare

Friday, we will resume our Family Attendance Matters Game Days! Our attendance is the highest across all elementary schools at every grade level. Attendance is a measuring stick on how we are thriving or not as a school. Students look forward to coming to school, and that is the highest honor we can pay to our teachers and support staff! By the way, we rocked the CHKS Survey participation challenge! With over 220 parents taking the survey, 65 Staff members, and 47 students taking the survey! We are a strong contender for receiving the prize!

In partnership,

Principal Smith

District Enrollment is Open!

Parents interested in our Kindergarten DLI Program

If you are a TK Parent, you are starting to think about Kindergarten. We hope that you will choose to continue your child's journey at Madison! We have two programs at Madison in Kindergarten. If you need assistance with navigating the process, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Parent Facilitator Alejandra Moran, amoran@slusd.us.

  • If you are a current parent of a Mandarin Kindergartner, we will be adding two first grade Mandarin classes in the fall and your students will move into the next class in the same way all of our students do, only your child's class will have the DLI Mandarin program.

  • Current Kindergarten - 4th grade families do not need to do anything else to promote to the next grade.

  • 5th grade families will need to enroll online on the District website for Middle School.

The District is hosting a special evening for incoming middle school families:

Moving to Middle School

The shift from elementary school to middle school can bring both enthusiasm and unease for students and parents. Is your child preparing for sixth grade? We will share resources to support you and your scholar’s transition to sixth grade. Dinner will be provided. There will be raffle prizes for participation. Spanish and Chinese translation provided. Childcare provided for school age children able to use the restroom independently. All SLUSD Families Welcome!

SAN LEANDRO, CA - The San Leandro Unified School District is proud to share that Joseph Sanchez, a resilient SLUSD student, has been selected as the honoree to ride on the Donate Life Rose float in Monday’s Rose Parade in Pasadena.

This honor comes as a fitting tribute to Joseph, whose life has been described as a miracle by his doctors. Joseph's medical history has been marked by tremendous challenges, beginning at just seven months old when he was diagnosed with cancer. Subsequent to that, he underwent a liver transplant, followed by a kidney transplant seven years later. In 2023, Joseph received a new heart, capping a rare and remarkable journey through three sequential transplants that his medical team described as unprecedented.

As Joseph embarks on this momentous occasion at the Rose Parade, the San Leandro Unified School District extends its heartfelt congratulations and encourages the community to celebrate Joseph's resilience and the gift of life made possible by organ donors.
