Stay Informed, Stay Involved: See the October SLUSD Update!

SAN LEANDRO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
"Making Excellence Our Tradition"
October, 2023

Dear SLUSD Community,

I'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our Back to School Nights in September! Our dedicated staff put in a lot of effort to showcase the exciting developments in our schools, and we hope you found the insights into our classrooms both enriching and engaging.

In the spirit of building stronger partnerships, we invite you to consider joining your school's parent leadership groups. You can explore opportunities like joining the School Site Council (SSC) or the English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) if your child is an English learner, along with other parent groups available at your school. These leadership groups play a pivotal role in shaping the programs and services offered at our school, and your valuable input is essential for continuous improvement. More details can be found on your school's website, and please keep an eye on messages from your principal through ParentSquare.

We look forward to seeing you at the exciting October events across our schools. Stay connected with us through ParentSquare to stay updated on all the fun and festive activities ahead!

Dr. Mike McLaughlin
Superintendent

MISSING SCHOOL MATTERS!

alt_text

Missing a school day may not seem significant, but the impact is profound! When students miss just two days a month, they'll lose out on 20 days of learning each year. That's 30 hours of math and a staggering 60 hours of reading and writing. By graduation, they'll have effectively missed over one year of schooling.

Now, imagine missing four days a month – that's 40 days a year! Your student will miss 60 hours of math and 120 hours of reading and writing over the school year. By graduation, they’ll have missed over two years of education.

If you need support with school attendance, our staff is here to help. Reach out to your school today!

SLUSD COMMUNITY SCHOOLS UPDATE

Last spring, SLUSD announced the award of the $10,450,000 California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP) grant from the California State Board of Education, which is now underway. This exciting development signifies a significant step in enhancing educational and support services for SLUSD students and families.

This funding enables us to extend our existing programs and provide comprehensive student care. The implementation of the CCSPP grant is set to bolster existing student health and wellness initiatives and expand community-based partnerships. This includes building after-school programs, mental health services, and various other resources to empower students to succeed in school and beyond.

These services and programs are being implemented at eight district schools, including Garfield Elementary, Halkin Elementary, Jefferson Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Monroe Elementary, Bancroft and John Muir Middle Schools, and Lincoln High School. These schools were eligible for grant funding based on specific student demographics, including the number of English learners, students meeting income or categorical eligibility criteria for free or reduced-price meals under the National School Lunch Program, and students in the foster youth program.

Look for more information from your schools about the positive impact and transformative changes this grant will bring to the education and well-being of students and their families in the coming years.
