Guidance for Families on safeguarding immigrants’ rights under the law

In response to increased threats to California immigrant communities, Attorney General Rob Bonta has provided guidance to public institutions on safeguarding immigrants’ rights under the law. California law does not require school officials to allow immigration agents to enter schools without a judicial warrant, as outlined in this guidance.

As a proud Sanctuary District, San Leandro Unified School District remains committed to protecting the rights and well-being of our immigrant students and families. In February 2017, the San Leandro Board of Trustees passed Amended Board Resolution No. 17-07, affirming that all district facilities and programs are sanctuaries for students and families threatened by immigration enforcement. For more information about the San Leandro School Board resolution and immigrant rights, click here.

What Does This Mean in SLUSD?

  • School personnel shall not refer students or families to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

  • Any requests by ICE to visit a school must be forwarded to the Superintendent’s Office for review.

  • All ICE requests for information or documents must be reviewed by District legal counsel through the Superintendent’s Office.

In addition to the district’s efforts, the City of San Leandro passed a resolution on February 21, 2024, declaring itself a Sanctuary City, further solidifying the community’s commitment to protecting immigrant residents.

For more information or support regarding student and family rights, please contact communications@slusd.us.
