San Leandro, CA—Every middle school student in the San Leandro Unified School District has now been trained in hands-only CPR, thanks to a powerful collaboration with the East Bay Regional Park District, the City of San Leandro, and the Red Cross.
At both Bancroft and John Muir Middle Schools, CPR instruction was led by student leaders in Peer Advocates and Leadership programs. After receiving training themselves, these students taught their peers during physical education classes, demonstrating the strength of youth leadership and the power of peer-to-peer learning.
This effort would not have been possible without the dedication of many staff members across both schools. Educators, support staff, and administrators came together to support the training and create meaningful learning experiences for students. “This initiative gave our students the skills to save lives and the opportunity to lead,” said Dr. Mike McLaughlin, district superintendent. “It was a true community effort, and we’re proud to see our students rise to the challenge.”
This hands-on training marks a major milestone in health and safety education across the district. The collaboration with local partners made it possible to reach every middle school student in SLUSD with this critical instruction.
