Celebrate and Give Thanks: November SLUSD Update!

SAN LEANDRO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
"Making Excellence Our Tradition"
November, 2023

Dear SLUSD Community,

These past weeks have been a whirlwind of celebration and excitement in our schools! As we navigate this school year, the atmosphere within and beyond our classrooms is undeniably invigorating. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated school staff and families who wholeheartedly invest their time and effort in organizing community events, such as our much-loved Fall Festivals. These occasions not only create joyous moments but also strengthen the bonds that form the bedrock of our school community, forging enduring memories for both students and families.

Moreover, we express our profound gratitude for the unwavering support our community has consistently shown for Measure N, a resounding success at the ballot box in 2020. The funds made available through Measure N have played an instrumental role in facilitating many facility improvements across our district. Just this past month, we celebrated the impact of these investments with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an enlightening tour of Bancroft Middle School, allowing the community to witness firsthand the exciting developments taking shape. We also proudly dedicated the Lincoln High School campus, a year ago merely a field of potential. These transformative enhancements are only possible thanks to the unwavering support of our community. For that, we express our deepest gratitude to everyone who played a part in making Measure N a reality.

Your invaluable support and contributions are the cornerstone of our schools' success, and we can't thank you enough.

Dr. Mike McLaughlin
Superintendent

WHEN TO ATTEND

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS SUNDAY NOVEMBER 5

alt_text
As daylight saving time ends this weekend, students can look forward to a little extra sleep and brighter mornings. On the first Sunday in November, the clocks "fall back" one hour, which means they gain an additional hour of sleep. This change can be a welcome relief for students, who often struggle with early morning classes and diminished sunlight during the darker months. It's a chance to reset their internal clocks and enjoy a more natural rhythm, potentially improving concentration, mood, and overall well-being. So, as the days grow shorter and nights longer, students can savor that extra hour of sleep and look forward to more energized and productive days.

Indigenous Peoples’ Heritage Month

November is a special month in SLUSD as we come together to honor and celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Heritage Month. During this time, our schools engage in activities and celebrations that embrace the rich tapestry of Northern, Southern, and Central Native American heritage. This allows us to not only pay tribute to the diverse cultures and histories of Indigenous people but also to celebrate the Native American students, families, and communities that are an integral part of our district. Through instructional activities and celebrations, we better understand contemporary issues, culture, and the significant contributions that Native Americans have made to California, the United States, and the world.

National Family Literacy Month shines a spotlight on the critical importance of literacy within the family unit. This observance encourages families to foster a love for reading. It emphasizes the profound impact parents, caregivers, and siblings can have in nurturing literacy skills. When families read and learn together, they not only strengthen their bonds but also empower the next generation with the tools they need to succeed in school and life. Día de los Muertos on November 1 and 2

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a colorful and deeply meaningful holiday celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. It's a time when families and communities come together to honor and remember their deceased loved ones. Families create vibrant ofrendas (altars) adorned with marigolds, sugar skulls, and the favorite foods of the departed. These ofrendas serve as a way to welcome the spirits of the deceased back to the world of the living. Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of life, a joyful remembrance of those who have passed, and a testament to the enduring connection between the living and the dead.
