Dual Language Immersion Expansion

Mandarin DLI has Launched at Madison Elementary

This Fall, Madison has been able to offer the very first Mandarin Dual Language Immersion program in SLUSD.  After receiving over 100 applications, they launched two full Mandarin DLI Kindergarten classrooms.  It is so exciting to see the amazing young students at Madison Elementary immersed in learning a new language or proud to be the experts in the room using their home language.

Spanish Dual Language Immersion at Bancroft Middle School

Our first cohort of 6th-grade students has started the year in the new Spanish Dual Language program at Bancroft.  Students who participate in the Spanish DLI program at Bancroft can enroll in the DLI Spanish for Spanish Speakers course of study and the Spanish DLI History class with the option of adding zero-period P.E. and an elective class.  The Spanish DLI program supports students in continuing to develop the Spanish Language and supports their path toward the State Seal of Biliteracy.

Meet two of our 6th-grade newcomers, Santiago and Andres, who share the benefits of entering the program as native Spanish speakers.  “You don’t forget Spanish, which was the first language I learned,” shares Andres.  Santiago adds, “You get to be more relaxed in history class because I understand everything the teacher says.

Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

Madison Elementary held its first Mid-Autumn Moon Festival this month.  The community celebrated with different performances, crafts, and food.   Like the Lunar New Year, the Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture—the history of the festival dates back over 3,000 years. The Madison community lit lanterns of all sizes and shapes to symbolize a light to prosperity and good fortune.

Newcomer Pathway Expansion at SLHS

This year, the EL SLHS Newcomer pathway has expanded to include more course offerings. In addition to Designated ELD, English, and Math courses, they can now enroll in Biology, US History, and Government as these have been added to the integrated ELD content courses. This is a great opportunity for our Newcomer students to learn content in targeted courses while making progress on their A-G requirements with continued support to develop their English skills.

English Learner Picnic for SLHS Students

On September 28th, over 120 multilingual high school students were able to build community and enjoy some time together at Toyon Park for the inaugural English Learner Picnic!  Students in ELD courses 1-4 took a field trip during the school day to the nearby park, sharing experiences and building friendships. Spearheaded by the ELD coordinator, Laura Einhorn, students had the opportunity to meet peers across all languages and English levels. Many brought soccer balls, badminton rackets, and volleyballs to play at the park, while others enjoyed the playground and great conversations. Thank you to SLED for the mini-grant to sponsor a delicious taquero lunch and pizza for students!

Both middle schools hosted an English Learner informational meeting for families of English Learners at the beginning of the school year.  The EL Specialist, Cybele Camberos, provided an overview of the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC) and an explanation of score reports.  She shared how English Learner students are placed in ELD (English Language Development) classes and the reclassification criteria for middle school.
