SLUSD Safety Updates for the 23-24 school year

Dear San Leandro Unified Community,

As we prepare for the start of the 2023-24 school year, the safety and security of all students and staff remain our top priorities. Here are important safety upgrades for this year:

Additional Supervision Personnel: To enhance campus safety, we are adding more campus supervisors to our middle and high schools. Their presence will help ensure a more secure environment.

Student Identification Cards: Students at middle/high schools will be required to wear student identification cards at all times. This measure will help school staff quickly identify students and visitors on campus. Cards will be issued after student photo days.

Vape Detection Sensors Pilot Projects: In response to vaping concerns, we are launching a pilot project for vape detection sensors in select restrooms at middle and high schools. These sensors will notify school authorities of vaping activity, helping us address this issue quickly.

Main Entry Door Remote Lock and Video Intercom - San Leandro High School: We are installing a remote door buzzer and lock system at San Leandro High School, including the FTK building. This added layer of access control will bolster campus security.

Visitor Management System: Across all campuses, we are implementing an electronic visitor management system for enhanced safety. Visitors will check in and undergo background checks against national sex offender registries and district-provided lists, receiving a printed badge upon approval.

Emergency Management System: We are introducing an emergency management system that digitizes the district's response plans. This will streamline emergency actions and expedite reunification protocols during crises. The system will be operational in Fall 2023.

These changes will require adjustments, and we appreciate your understanding and support as we implement them. Please note that the Visitor Management System might experience a slight delay due to equipment shipping, but we expect it to be operational shortly after the start of the school year.

These security upgrades reflect our unwavering commitment to creating a safe learning environment for everyone in our school community. We thank you for your continued support in fostering a secure and nurturing atmosphere for all our students, staff, and visitors.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mike McLaughlin
