Did you know the free/reduced-price meal program determines school funding for all of our students? Did you know approved meal applications can help reduce costs for internet access, SAT and college application fees, and child care? This is why we are asking all SLUSD families are being asked to complete the application HERE! Even if your child doesn’t plan to eat school meals, we need your help to ensure our schools and families can access the resources they need. About the Benefits School Funding Every meal application can generate an additional $6,000 in funding for our schools which will benefit ALL students. Without these completed applications, our schools could lose millions of dollars. SAT and College Application Fees Any 11th and 12th-grade student who is approved for the free/reduced-price meal program is eligible for SAT fee waivers. These waivers also allow eligible students to choose four colleges from over 2,000 participating colleges and apply for free. Child Care and Afterschool Programs Many organizations enroll children who qualify for free/reduced-price meals in child care, afterschool programs, and summer camps at no cost. Internet Service Through a partnership with Comcast, the Internet Essentials Program provides internet for less than $10 a month for qualifying families. You can also purchase a laptop or desktop computer for $149 and get free classes to assist in learning internet basics. Find more information at www.internetessentials.com. Frequently Asked Questions Question: What is the deadline to submit applications? Answer: Applications are accepted throughout the year, but only applications submitted by October 31 bring additional funding to our schools. Question: Could participation in this program impact immigration status? Answer: Absolutely not! This program is not considered a public benefit. See more guarantees from the California Department of Education here. Question: Is there a chance that my information is subject to verification? Answer: We are asked to verify 2% of all applications. If the information is not accurate, the student will be ineligible for further free and reduced-price meals, but there is no additional contact or reporting. More questions? Dear SLUSD Community,
With yesterday’s news that Alameda County has moved into the Red Tier from the Purple Tier under the State of California’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy1, you are likely wondering how this affects SLUSD. I will explain how this new information relates to our planning, and what this means for us right now.
The SLUSD school board meeting scheduled for tomorrow night, August 18th at 6:00 pm, has been canceled due to the potential for power outage activity during the meeting. Our next school board meeting will be on September 15th. We also have an additional school board meeting scheduled on September 29th to ensure all school board business can be conducted in a timely manner. At this time, we do not anticipate these outages to affect our ability to conduct distance learning this week during school hours. If conditions change, you will be notified via our SLUSD communication channels, including ParentSquare and our SLUSD website at www.slusd.us.To learn more about whether or not there are power outages in your neighborhood, please consult the outage map at www.pge.com.
Video instructions available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.
