COVID Update: Test Kits and Five Day Quarantine Next Week
SAN LEANDRO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
"Making Excellence Our Tradition"
February 9, 2022

Dear SLUSD Community,

We shared encouraging news related to the pandemic at last night’s school board meeting. First, we have take-home COVID test kits ready for all students and staff prior to our February break. These kits will be provided at your school sites, so watch for more details coming from your principals next week. We will also be providing take-home kits prior to our spring break in April.

Also, starting Monday, February 14, we will be moving to five-day isolation and quarantine timelines in order to align with updated guidelines from our local health department. This shift is possible with greatly lowered COVID rates in our community and will allow better continuity of learning for our students and staff. As always, we will continue to monitor health conditions in our schools and pivot to more restrictive protocols if necessary.

I have included more details about both of these changes below, and we will share more information as needed moving forward. I hope you are as encouraged as I am for what these changes mean for spring in SLUSD.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mike McLaughlin
Superintendent

TAKE-HOME TEST KITS NEXT WEEK

Your school will be distributing at-home COVID test kits prior to the Presidents Week break (February 21 to 25). This community-wide testing will help keep us healthy when we return on February 28.

Each kit contains two tests with instructions on how to administer the test. It is essential that these tests are taken on the following dates:

TEST 1: Take on Friday, February 25
TEST 2: Take on Sunday, February 27

If your child tests positive on either of these dates, keep them at home and report the positive result to your school.

These tests are strongly recommended, but testing is not required for a student to return to school on February 28. Thank you for your support in keeping our schools safe and healthy!

FIVE DAY ISOLATION & QUARANTINE TIMELINES

SLUSD COVID timelines are changing on Monday, February 14 based on updated state and county recommendations. See below for details:

STUDENTS & STAFF WHO TEST POSITIVE FOR COVID-19
Regardless of vaccination status, previous infection within the past 90 days, or lack of symptoms, students and staff can return to school after 5 days by following these protocols:
  1. They do not have any symptoms of COVID-19 or symptoms are resolving.
  2. They must be fever-free for at least 24 hours without the aid of fever-reducing medications
  3. They must provide a negative test on day 5 or later. Negative test results may be emailed to your school or brought into your school’s front office.  At-home tests will be accepted.
If unable to test or choosing not to test, quarantine can end after day 10.

STUDENTS & STAFF EXPOSED TO COVID AT SCHOOL (CLOSE CONTACTS)
Exposed students & staff, regardless of vaccination status or prior infection within the past 90 days may remain at school with a negative COVID test provided within 3-5 days after exposure. Negative tests results may be emailed to your school or brought into your school’s front office.  At-home tests will be accepted.

If unable to test or choosing not to test, quarantine can end after day 10.

STUDENTS & STAFF EXPOSED TO COVID AT HOME OR IN THE COMMUNITY
Vaccinated students & staff may remain at school with a negative COVID test provided within 3-5 days after exposure. Negative test results may be emailed to your school or brought into your school’s front office.  At-home tests will be accepted.

If unable to test or choosing not to test, quarantine can end after day 10.

Unvaccinated students & staff must quarantine for 5 days and can return to school with a negative COVID test after that time.  Negative test results may be emailed to your school or brought into your school’s front office.  At-home tests will be accepted.

If unable to test or choosing not to test, quarantine can end after day 10.
