Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS)

Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) is a framework or approach comprised of intervention practices and organizational systems for establishing the social culture, learning and teaching environment, and individual behavior supports needed to achieve academic and social success for all students.

Improving student academic and behavior outcomes ensures all students have access to the most effective and accurately implemented instructional and behavioral practices and interventions. School Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (SWPBIS) provides an operational framework for achieving these outcomes. More importantly, SWPBIS is NOT a curriculum, intervention, or practice but IS a decision-making framework that guides the selection, integration, and implementation of the best evidence-based academic and behavioral practices for improving important educational and behavior outcomes for all students. Specifically,

  • Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) provides a multi-tiered system of supports for school sites to organize evidence-based behavioral interventions into an integrated continuum that enhances academic and social behavior outcomes for all students.
  • Evidence-based features of School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) include:
    • Prevention
    • Define and teach positive social expectations
    • Acknowledge positive behavior
    • Arrange consistent, appropriate consequences for problem behavior
    • On-going collection and use of data for team-based decision making
    • Continuum of intensive, individual intervention supports
    • Implementation of the systems that support effective practices

All SLUSD schools are implementing School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS). For more information about Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) at your child’s school, please get in touch with your site.
